Take
a step back in time and experience the sight and sounds of Britain's
Home Front, wander around a core area of authentically reconstructed
tunnels which provide you with first hand experience of daily life
in war-torn Britain.
In the company
of an expert guide you will be supplied with a helmet and lamp and
given the opportunity to witness the extent of Stockport's air raid
shelter preparations.
Opening Times
The museum is open Monday to Saturday 11.00-5.00 and on Sundays
1.00-5.00. Last recommended admissions are at 4.15pm.
Booking your
visit
Booking ahead is essential if you are bringing a group of foreign
students to the museum. This means the museum will know that the
group are EFL students and you can benefit from the specially designed
worksheets.
1. Contact the museum on tel.+44 161 474 1940 or fax. +44 161 474
1942 and say you want to make a booking for EFL students.
2. When making the booking please give the following details: date
and time of visit; your name and position/relationship to the students;
name of organisation; which country/countries the students come
from; number of students; age of students; students' level of English;
how you are going to pay for the visit; special requests (i.e. if
you are bringing a coach the museum can advise on parking).
3. You should arrange payment with the museum in advance.
4. Your booking will be confirmed and you collect tickets on arrival.
Prices
Group discounts are available. Please ask at the time of booking.
Standard admission prices are £3.25 adults and £2.25
children.
Transport
The museum is situated in the centre of Stockport on Chestergate.
If you are arriving
by coach you are just 5 minutes walk away from the central bus &
coach station. Coach drop-off points can be advised at time of booking.
If you are arriving
by bus the museum is situated 5 minutes walk from the main Stockport
bus station.
If you are arriving
by car you can park at various inexpensive car parks nearby. The
nearest are situated at Heaton Lane, Mersey Way and Grand Central.
Take junction 1 off the M60 and follow the signposts for the Stockport
Air Raid Shelters.
If you are arriving
by train the museum is only 10 minutes walk away.
Other useful
information
- Toilets are
available across the road.
- There is
no café at the Shelters but lots of cafes for students
to sit in around the town centre.
- Wheelchair
access is to the whole shelters.
- Worksheets
are available for EFL students as well as for other groups of
students i.e. younger students. Staff at the museum can recommend
which sheets are most appropriate to your group. There are also
further EFL activities, riddles and Basic Facts available at the
shelter.
- Maximum group
size for the museum is 15 students approx.
- A visit to
this museum should be followed or preceded by a visit to the Hat
Works which is situated about 5 minutes walk away in Stockport
town centre. Please see the separate information sheet for this

- There is
small shop in the museum which wartime memorabilia and souvenirs.
If students wish to visit the shop they should do so in small
groups.
- Visitors
are advised to wear warm clothes and sensible shoes as the shelters
are cold and have uneven floors.
- It is strictly
forbidden to smoke or eat in the shelters.
