The
Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester is housed in the buildings
of the world's oldest passenger railway station. There are more
than 12 galleries packed with colourful exhibits and hands-on interactives
to help you explore the history, science and technology of the world's
first industrial city.

The Museum is open every day from 10am - 5pm, except Dec.
24/25/26.
Booking your
visit
Booking ahead is essential if you are bringing a group of foreign
students to the museum. This means the Museum will know that the
group are EFL students and you can benefit from the specially designed
worksheets.
1. Contact the learning centre on tel.+44 161 833 0027 fax. +44
161 832 1511 or email education@msim.org.uk
and say you want to make a booking for EFL students.
2. When making the booking please give the following details: date
and time of visit; your name and position/relationship to the students;
name of organisation; which country/countries the students come
from; number of students; age of students; students' level of English;
how you are going to pay for the visit.
3. You will then be sent a booking form which should be completed
and returned in order to confirm your booking.
On Arrival
You should assemble at the information desk. You will be met by
a member of the Museum staff who will issue your tickets.
Prices
Admission to the Museum's permanent collections is free of
charge. A charge is made for special exhibitions.
Transport
The Museum is in the Castlefield area of Manchester city centre.
If you are arriving
by coach, students can be dropped off outside the Museum.
Unfortunately, there is no parking
nearby.
Deansgate train station is 5 minutes walk from the Museum.
The Museum is easily accessible from the city centre on foot.
Other useful
information
- Toilets are
available on every floor of the museum.
- There is
a small café at the museum with a varied menu and selling
snacks and drinks. There are facilities for students to eat their
packed lunches.
- Wheelchair
access is to 90% of the museum and there are also accessible toilets
and a sympathetic hearing scheme.
- Worksheets
are available for EFL students as well as for other groups of
students i.e. younger students and to supplement your learning
programme. Staff at the museum can recommend which sheets are
most appropriate to your group.
- Maximum group
size for the lunch area is 50 students approx. students should
be supervised by group leaders at all times. A ratio of 1 adult
to 20 students is advisable.
- There is
great shop in the museum which sells books popular science as
well as teaching materials and souvenirs. If students wish to
visit the shop they should do so in small groups (max. 10-15 at
a time).
- The shop
also sells stamps and postcards.
