Information
Award-winning galleries devoted to water and steam power, with hands-on displays and exhibits and an 1830s Beam Engine which steams daily, are major attractions.

Discover the lives of the mill workers and how pauper children spent their time, with lessons in the schoolroom, and hours working cleaning up cotton waste among the clattering looms which today produce Styal Calico cloth.

Opening Times
The mill is open every day from 11am - 6pm in the summer (last admission 4.30pm) and from 11am - 5pm in the winter (last admission 3.30pm). It is closed on Mondays from October until the end of March (except school holidays).

Booking your visit
Booking ahead is essential if you are bringing a group of foreign students to the museum. This means the mill will know that the group are EFL students and you can benefit from the specially designed worksheets and expertise at the mill.

1. Contact the education office at the mill on tel.+44 1625 527468 or email at enquiries@quarrybankmill.org.uk and say you want to make a booking for EFL students.

2. Discuss your requirements for the visit. Added options include a guide which can be booked for the entire visit (highly recommended) for £14. There are also foreign language guides (French, German,Spanish and Russian) which are available for £18 for the entire visit.

3. After you have made an initial booking you will be sent a booking form which you should complete with details of your party and their requirements. The following details will also be useful for the mill: date and time of visit; your name and position/relationship to the students; name of organisation; which country/countries the students come from; number of students; age of students; students' level of English; how you are going to pay for the visit; special requests (i.e. guides, workshops)

4. Your booking will be confirmed and you pay on arrival. Please bring your booking confirmation with you.

On Arrival
Students shouild make their way down from the car park to the Mill Yard. They will be taken to the lunch area where they can store their packed lunches and coats. No valuables should be left in this room. The supervising teacher should then go the education office to collect the tickets.

Prices
Admission to the mill only is £2.25, to the Apprentice House only £2.25 and to both is £3.25/head. Guides are avilable for £14-18 for groups of up to 20. This one-off charge is for the guide to accompany your whole visit and is very good value. Workshops are available for students to try some hands-on practical activities. These are from £2.25 per person.

Transport
The museum is situated in beautiful Cheshire countryside, near to Manchester airport.

If you are arriving by coach there is plenty of space to park at the mill. There is a charge for this.
If you are arriving by car you can park in front of the museum or down one of the streets nearby.
If you are arriving by public transport please ask for details of train and bus services at the time of booking.

Other useful information

  • There are plenty of toilets in the mill yard. Please make sure studenst know that there are no toilets elsewhere on the site. They should go before they walk up to the Apprentice House (10 minutes walk away).

  • There is a café serving snacks, hot food and drinks at the mill. There is a room for students to eat their packed lunches. This must be booked in advance.

  • Worksheets are available for EFL students as well as for other groups of students i.e. younger students and there are plenty of materials for sale in the shop. Staff at the education office can recommend which sheets are most appropriate to your group.

  • There must be a minimum of 1 adult supervisor for every 20 students.

  • There is big shop in the mill which sells teaching materials and souvenirs including cotton made at the mill and Traditional English food and beauty products as well as smaller toys and sweets designed for younger students.

  • Students can also buy stamps and post their postcards here.
