Of the existing research into music video, there is ample information on the role of the music, though it is hard to find possibly because of a lack of understanding of how sound and image combine successfully (the use of Madonna's Material Girl demonstrates this), a danger of applying film theory to music video. Andrew Goodwin's book Dancing in the Distraction Factory is therefore a groundbreaking book in its discarding of much of the previous research. Goodwin attempts successfully to disagree with writers who claim that image is of utmost importance in music video, and shows how image varies from merely supporting the text, to creating a mood or relaying a message.
Goodwin's thorough approach to music video analysis, his commitment to his theories and his disproving of previous theories makes his research welcome, and will continue to be a valuable reference work to future writings on pop music video.
